Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the experience of soldiers who were discharged in military hospitals and the needs of the military hospital¡¯s discharge care.

Method : Data were collected through focus group interviews with 3 groups (7 soldiers and 2 officers), and were analyzed by the analytic method of Colaizzi.

Results : Seven categories of discharge experience and contents of discharge care in the military hospital were identified. They included ambivalence to discharge, effort for the military personnel, perception of stress, influence of social support, feelings of adaptation, and change of health management attitudes. Through this result, it was found that the contents of discharge care were ¡¯constructed based on trust¡¯ between medical staffs and soldiers, advanced education about discharge protocol, continuous education about planned care process, appropriate discharge management for military personnel, and discharged soldier¡¯s management education for unit officers.

Conclusion : Discharged soldiers and unit officers want to have discharge care in military hospitals. Considering the results of this study, a discharge management program should be carefully developed in a more effective way to help discharged soldiers.
